" What is best ? Virtual or Face to face ? " : Pros & Cons of Interview types.

 


An interview can be described as qualitative research method that relies on asking question in view of collecting the data. Interviews at least involve with two persons, one whom ask the question is interviewer and the person who answer is the candidate or informer.

There are 4 common tools of Interviews, which are;

1. Structured Interview                        - This has predetermined set of questions.

2. Unstructured interview       - This is the most flexible type. There is no predetermined question list. Interview as any question freely and it could be continuation of previous question

3. Semi - Structured Interview - This is a mixture of both structured and unstructured. Interviewers can have listed question as well as non listed questions which they are required to ask, meanwhile the order of asking question can be changed.

4. Focus Group interviews             - Participation of group to answer the questions.

 

Virtual   and   In-person   Interviews

Way of interviewing the candidates can be identified in two ways

1. In – person interview – traditional face to face interview mechanism

2. Virtual Interview         - Digitalized plat form use for the interview process.

With the restriction imposed for travelling during the Covid-19 pandemic period, many companies transformed to digital plat forms to carry out their economic actives. Companies had to perform despite challenges incur around it and they had to explore new work force or develop existing work force to enhance their productivity and in achieving the goals. Therefore company HR had to maintain HR function continuously during the Covid-19 period. One of the main challenge that HR faces is how to conduct the interviews as it was regulated to maintain the distance with people during the pandemic period. The Digitalization came in handy at this point as many companies and HR teams have adopted digital plat forms in their routine works. Virtual Interviews surfaced in HRM henceforth.


Virtual Interview – Pros and con

Benefits from the virtual interview

> Speed At a given time you can participate in interview process. Consumption of time is less. Possible to interview more candidates in one days, which will expedite the recruiting process.

> Flexibility – All parties can participate without concerning of travelling, arranging transport, finding childcare as this allows all parties to attend from workstation or home.

> Potential to call many candidates – Given the fact that distance does not matter, HR can find many talented, quality candidates which could have eliminated if conduct in-person method as candidates from outstation discourage to travel long distances.

 

Disadvantage in the virtual interview

> Technical Drawbacks – Connectivity, glitches in technical device will disrupt to a conversation where a potential candidate will have a probability of losing his/her opportunity.

> Lack of Technology Access – Some candidates may not have access to any technical device owing to the financial background or any other reasons, which will lead the candidate to struggle to find the access.

> Distraction – Both parties will have distraction owing to the surrounding which will disrupt to the conversation



 

In-person Interview – Pros and con

Benefits from the In-personal interviews

> Study on body Language – Face to face interview allows to observe the candidate behavior which will provide more insight information about candidates attitudes, eloquent style, personality.

> Sighting Interpersonal Skill – This could use as a test on interpersonal skills in a stress situation, nervous situation of a candidate as it is vital factor in a working place.

> Visual aids – The in-person interview will allow to share visual aids that demonstrate the benefits from the company, reputation of the company, how organized is the company as candidates are allow to step into the company premises.

 

Disadvantage in the virtual interview

Bias risk – Individuals with disabilities or from underrepresented groups will not be able to perform face to face as does in virtual option. This will lead to a bias in recruiting candidates.

> Unexpected delays – Unforeseen will affect in participation of an interview. Accident on the way, flight delays or any other similar incident may cause candidate to be late or cancel the interview at final moment.

> Increase of pressure –Face to face interviews may create a stress in candidate. Immense pressure in candidate would throw him/her away from the competition.

 



 

In view of optimizing the HRM strategies related to the recruitment process, company could adopt to mix of in-person interview or virtual interview. If company requires structured interview method it can involve in virtual interview as it would save time and money of both parties. If company intends to follow unstructured specially to judge the candidate by his/her body language, interpersonal skills, company can use in-person interview. Analyzing the pros and cons of each interview types, company can select either in-personal or virtual interview methods based on scenarios.
